Abstract: 水タバコとはタバコの種類の一つであり,水パイプという専用の喫煙具を使い,タバコ煙を水にくぐらせて長いホースを通して吸引する。水タバコの喫煙は近年,若者の間で急速に流行しており日本国内で水タバコの喫煙可能店が増加している。既報では水タバコ喫煙による血漿ニコチン濃度は紙巻きタバコと同程度であることが報告されている。さらに,呼気一酸化炭素濃度は,紙巻きタバコ喫煙よりも高くなることや,タールについても紙巻きタバコよりも多いことが報告されている。したがって,水タバコの喫煙は健康障害を生じる可能性があり,水タバコの有害性に対する正しいエビデンスについての啓発を行うことが必要であると考えられる。Waterpipe smoking is a form of tobacco smoking that uses a device, in which tobacco leaves, flavoring, glycerin, and other ingredients are burned with charcoal, and the smoke is inhaled after passing through water. Waterpipe smoking is increasing in popularity across Japan, particularly among young people. Its negative health effects are continuously debated because a general belief that its harmful substances are supposedly eliminated during their passage through water is in question. However, the plasma nicotine concentrations from waterpipe smoking are reported similar to those from traditional cigarettes. Furthermore, tar level and concentration of exhaled carbon monoxide are reported that higher in waterpipe smoking than traditional cigarettes. Ultimately, waterpipe smoking may cause health problems. Thus, educating the public about its health hazards is crucial.
