Abstract

This study explores how the abstraction level of advice influences creative thinking during design ideation. Two experimental conditions were compared: A Task (Recommendations primarily based on anticipated usage purposes and conditions) and C Task (Recommendations primarily focused on concrete operational forms). Using the TTCT framework, participants’ sketches were evaluated across fluency, flexibility,originality, elaboration. Results showed that A Task stimulated divergent and conceptual thinking, encouraging broader idea generation and reinterpretation of product meaning, whereas C Task enhanced convergent and structural thinking, leading to precise forms and feasible solutions. When participants were grouped by overall creativity scores, high-ability individuals performed better under A Task, while low-ability participants benefited more from concrete, action-oriented feedback. These findings suggest that advice complement each other within a creative iteration process, where idea generation and realization interact cyclically. The study contributes to design education by proposing that adaptive use of abstract and concrete guidance—according to the designer’s cognitive style and design phase—can foster both the breadth and depth of creative ideation.
