Literature Review on Ethnic Identity and the "Generational" Factor Part One : 1988～1998

Abstract

This paper is the first of a two-part literature review on the theme of ethnic identity andgenerational change. It covers the period of 1988 to 1998 and consists of a theoretical discussionof major concepts such as “ethnic identity”, “the generational factor”, and “assimilation” in the context of Ethnic Studies in North America, followed by a detailed review of relevantstudies published during those ten years.

本稿は北米における「エスニック・アイデンティティと『世代』の要因」をテーマにした研究のレビューを土台としている。1970～1980年代にかけてエスニシティ研究の分野では「エスニシティの本質」をめぐっての議論が活発であったが、その後の研究者の関心動向を把握する上で主要学術雑誌、文献のレビューを行なった。1980年代後半以降に浮上した「エスニシティの黄昏論」から「パンエスニシティ」、そして「同化理論の復興」までの様々な研究テーマを解説しながら、「エスニック・アイデンティティ」、「世代間継承」、そして「同化」などの概念を再考するのが目的である。
