抄録: Kawata Tadashi (1925-2008), publishing the first Japanese text book on the subject of International Relations (Kokusai Kankei Gairon) in 1958, is regarded as one of the founders of “International Relations” in the post-world war II Japan. On the other hand, he is also known as one of the founders of other disciplines in Japan, that is, “International Political Economy” and “Peace Research.” He started his research from International Relations, then developed it into International Political Economy and Peace Research. Then, what are the characteristics of his each researches? How do the three disciplines related to each other? And, what are the most important consideration which permeated Kawata’s entire researches? This paper examines the above questions, following basically the chronological sequence of his research development. In the first section, Yanaihara Tadao’s “Colonial Policy Study,” which plays an important role in providing the basis of Kawata’s International Relations, is examined. In the second section, Kawata’s International Relations and International Political Economy are considered. Because Kawata’s International Relations are conceived as the set of International Economics and International Politics from the beginning, it is not surprising that his International Relations developed into International Political Economy. Kawata’s International Relations is characterized by strong criticism against realism which tends to hinder social change. And Kawata’s International Political Economy is characterized by his attitude exploring the possible change of international society with an emphasis on morality. In the third section, Kawata’s Peace Research is considered. While his Peace Research shares in common the features mentioned above, namely, criticism of realism, emphasis on morality, and search for social change, it is also important to realize that his aspirations for peace, created through his own experience on the war, is the major support for his Peace Research.
