海を渡る花嫁への一考察（1） : バーバラ・川上によるピクチャー・ブライド・ストーリーズを通して

Abstract

2016年にハワイ大学出版会から上梓されたピクチャー・ブライド・ストーリーズの著者バーバラ・川上(旧姓オヤマ)自身、1921年熊本で生まれて三カ月で両親とともにハワイへ渡った。1920年には淑女協定、すなわち日本政府が写真花嫁へのビザ発給を自主的に停止した。1924年のいわゆる排日移民法によって、海を渡る花嫁は途絶える。バーバラは1909年から1923年にハワイへ写真花嫁としてきた一世のライフ・ヒストリーを丁寧に聞き取っている。特に、写真花嫁たちの定位家族と生殖家族の双方の輪郭がわる貴重な本である。本研究ノートは、なぜ写真花嫁たちが海を渡ったのかを定位家族に着眼し分析する。Barbara Kawakami, the author of Picture Bride Stories (2016), was born in Kumamoto in 1921. She was only three months old when her family moved to Hawaii. By this time the Japanese government had voluntarily ceased issuing passports for picture brides due to the Ladiesʼ Agreement of 1920. Moreover, the U.S. Congress passed the Immigration Act of 1924 which is well known as the Japanese Exclusion Act. Barbara was indirectly affected by these historical events and supported by an extensive documentation of picture brides who came to Hawaii during 1909 to 1923, has provided her work with unique voice and eye for detail. Approaching to the family of orientation of picture brides, this study note will explore exactly why Japanese brides crossed the Pacific Ocean.
