| Abstract: | Projective identification is based on an ego structure centered on splitting as primitive defense. Projective identification causes countertransference in the analyst and interferes with psychoanalytic work. However, understanding client's projective identification helps the therapist to appreciate the client's psychic reality in an empathic manner. Case material is presented to illustrate the clinical functions of projective identification. The boy was 7-years-old who had difficulty in maintaining stable object relationships and controlling his temper. He used projective identification so as to maintaining splitting of "all-good" from "all-bad" ego states. He could not make clear differentiation between self and object representations. As he recalled infantile traumatic experiences in the therapy process, he gradually integrated self-representation and object-representation. |
